Four Ways to Beat Winter Dryness

As the temperature drops (and won’t be warming up any time soon!) you might notice your skin changing with the weather. The number one culprit that affects skin at this time of year is dryness.

Dryness in the skin usually presents itself as visible skin flakes, skin constantly feeling tight, and sometimes stinging because your skin barrier is damaged. If this sounds familiar – keep reading!

Winter skin dryness

It’s no secret that your skin responds to changes in the environment – there’s definitely a relationship between moisture levels in skin and ambient humidity, but how can you help your skin when everything is just so dry and cold?

There are a few things that you can do to keep your skin protected and nourished in the colder months, making sure that your skin barrier is intact and fortifying your skin against harsh winter weather.

Use A Humidifier

Using a humidifier can balance the moisture levels in the air – making it better not only for your skin but for your overall health. In wintertime, using fireplaces and heaters tends to dry out our homes and offices even more, so it’s really important to compensate for the lack of moisture in the environment.

Turn Down The Hot Water

While nothing sounds better than a super steamy bath in the wintertime, this is also a major cause of excessively dry skin in the winter – water that’s too hot will strip oils and moisture from your skin, making it prone to dryness.

Now, I’m not saying that you need to take cold showers in the winter, just don’t be tempted to make it as hot as possible to combat the freezing temperatures outside. And as always – apply a rich body moisturiser or oil to seal in moisture and prevent dry skin.

Change Up Your Skin Care Routine

If you’re still using the same routine that you used in the summertime, your skin might not be getting the adequate moisture it needs to stay healthy!

Ramp up your beauty routine with skin care fortifying ingredients, such as vitamins, ceramides, and oils and to protect your skin. Swap out your foaming cleanser for a gentler formula, and use a heavier moisturiser at night.

Use a Skin-Fortifying Sheet Mask

In the wintertime, nothing sounds worse to me than trying to use a cold, wet sheet mask on my face – no matter the ingredients. Luckily, you’ve got another option – a dry sheet mask.

The Inert mask is one of the best ways to keep moisture and nourishing ingredients to your skin – you can use it over the top of your favourite serum and night cream. It’s specially designed to help skin care absorb to the skin where it’s needed, hydrating and nourishing your skin, without freezing your face off. In fact, the warmth from your face helps the mask work even better!

With these four tips in mind, it’s incredibly easy to banish dry winter skin – once and for all.
